Geology day

Somehow we'd never made it to the Jerome Historical Park - yesterday we did.

While Sedona has great beauty in its rocks - there is a geological blah unless you get excited about the details of layers of sandstone and occasional limestone - It's neat, but not THAT old or diverse.

Jerome on the other hand is where there was volcanic and tectonic activity and undersea smokers - volcanic vents - and as a result many minerals and some elements were percolated from the matrix into what was extremely rich ore.. There are some rocks over a billion years old.

Jerome is also funky and has a freewheeling past - and one of these eons is probably going to slide down the mountain.   There are 88 miles of  underground mine tunnels (that caught fire and could not be put out) and a couple of abandoned open pit mines - and it's built on a fault.  There is one exhibit where you stand on glass on top of an abandoned shaft that goes down way over a thousand feet.  Shelley did not like it much.
